Roblox says it has decommissioned an AI agent that downloaded 3D assets from Open3DLab and its related sites, and that none of the collected data will be used for any purpose, including training AI models. The company confirmed the information in a statement to GameDeveloper.com after Open3DLab raised concerns about the scraping activity.

A Roblox spokesperson said a researcher had created the agent to collect publicly available 3D assets, but that it mistakenly scraped Open3DLab content and was not operating as intended. Roblox said it is strengthening safeguards for how such agents are built and reviewed.

Open3DLab administrator Salaryman said the crawler downloaded 1,027 files from 712 projects across Open3DLab, SmutBase and SFMLab. According to his account, 117.4 GB of the material came from the two adult-content sites. He said the agent retrieved their robots.txt instructions but did not follow them, and also disregarded Open3DLab’s terms, which prohibit scraping.

Open3DLab first detected the crawler on October 18 and blocked its attempts, then contacted the agent’s creator. Salaryman said the bot resumed scraping the following day and that information in its data indicated it was gathering models for an AI training dataset.

The incident prompted concern that adult material could enter training data for tools used to create assets on Roblox. Salaryman argued that models can reproduce patterns in their training data and said that collecting material without distinguishing adult content raised questions about safeguards. Roblox has stated that the downloaded data was not used for training or any other purpose.
